A worked example

The 1,000 g pack at $4.50 versus 350 g at $2.20. On the shelf it’s no contest: $0.45 versus $0.63 per 100. Use it all and bulk saves you $1.79 per pack.

But the break-even sits at 71.6%: use less than that and the “saving” changes sign. At 60% usage you throw away $1.80 of product and the small size wins by $0.73 — buying “the cheap one” cost you more.
