Bulk starts the race ahead: per unit it almost always costs less, and the brain closes the case right there. But the unit price carries a hidden assumption — that you’ll use all of it — and that’s exactly where household after household trips. The real price isn’t the one on the tag: it’s the price divided by what you actually use.
How it works
Four numbers from the store (price and quantity of both sizes) plus one honest number of your own: how much of the big pack you’ll consume before it expires, goes stale, or you simply stop caring.
effective price = price / (quantity × share used)
The calculator compares the bulk pack — corrected for your real usage — against the small one, and answers in money: the real saving per pack, the dollars thrown away as unused product, and the minimum usage share below which bulk loses no matter what the tag says.
A worked example
The 1,000 g pack at $4.50 versus 350 g at $2.20. On the shelf it’s no contest: $0.45 versus $0.63 per 100. Use it all and bulk saves you $1.79 per pack.
But the break-even sits at 71.6%: use less than that and the “saving” changes sign. At 60% usage you throw away $1.80 of product and the small size wins by $0.73 — buying “the cheap one” cost you more. Try moving just the usage share above: it’s the one number the tag doesn’t know, and it’s the one that decides.
The trap, measured
This isn’t hypothetical. The EPA’s food-waste guidance says it in one line: “buying in large quantities (e.g., buy one, get one free deals) only saves money if you use all the food before it spoils.” And unit pricing itself is worth defending — NIST calls it “the best tool a consumer has when shopping,” and cites research that 82% of consumers use it when it’s on the shelf. The catch is that it measures shelf value, not home value: the second half of the math — the share you’ll actually use — only you can supply. Fresh produce and bread top every waste survey, which is exactly where the generous format tempts hardest.
Things to keep in mind
- Your usage share is an estimate — like lifespan in the other calculators of this series. Look at your trash from the past few weeks, not at your intentions: “this time I’ll finish it” is the phrase waste is bought with.
- Perishability is the whole game. On detergent, the warehouse size is almost always a yes (it doesn’t expire); on bagged salad, real usage collapses and the bargain with it.
- Break-even isn’t the goal. Using 72% when break-even is 71.6% means you worked hard for nothing: bulk should win with a margin, not at the photo finish.
The twin of this calculation is cost per use: there you spread a purchase over its uses, here over how much of it you consume.
